A FIELD GUIDE TO THE REPTILES OF EAST AFRICA

This is truly a tremendous book. Both literally and otherwise. Yes, at nearly 550 pages it is an imposing tome, but more importantly, it is the result of the long, hard work of 4 dedicated authors. Originally published a few years ago, this book is just now gaining popularity here in the states, no doubt a partial result of the recent surge in popularity of many East African herps.

This text is primarily a field guide, that is, a source of concise information for identifying species in the field. However, this book will be of enormous interest to even those of us not regularly trekking the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro! The photography is superb, as are the descriptions and natural history information.

Most of the book constitutes the species profiles. This section is broken down into subsections including chelonians, lizards, snakes, worm lizards, and crocodiles. Each species profile is complete with both common and current Latin names, a photo, range maps, and information on identification, habitat, and natural history.

There are various identification keys throughout, complete with detailed line drawings and scalation diagrams. Additionally, you will find a great chapter on snake envenomation, as well as sections on photography, conservation, and even captive husbandry.

A detailed list of references and suggested readings is included, along with an amazing glossary. All entries are indexed by both common and scientific names, making quick references a breeze.

A Field Guide to the Reptiles of East Africa has so much to offer that I can simply not summarize it all here. What I can say is that if you have even the slightest interest is African herps, or field herping in general, this book is an absolute must have item!
