Encyclopedia of Terrarium

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TERRARIUM By Eugene Bruins

This book, originally published in Europe, has only recently become readily available in the United States. It is truly a superb collection of information on all types of terrarium animals including (but not limited to) reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, and insects.

The first section of the book provides an in-depth look at general considerations such as cage design and selection, selecting animals, nutrition, and more. The chapters covering building your own terrariums will be of special interest to those aiming to create naturalistic vivaria.

The remainder of the book, which is also the bulk of the text, covers a wide variety of species from around the world. The structure of this section of the book is rather ingenious. The species accounts are broken down by class, order, family, genus, and then by species. This not only allows you to pinpoint the taxonomy of the animals you are working with, but also provides you with further general information regarding each hierarchical level.

The species profiles will be of most interest to the majority of readers. Although there is ample information on all types of terrarium animals, the majority is on invertebrates, with almost as much space devoted to reptiles and amphibians.

Each species profile includes data on identification, distribution in the wild, housing and maintenance, and breeding. The information is presented in a manner that can be easily understood by neophyte hobbyists, but will be of just as much use to those with years of experience. Additionally color photographs of most featured animals are included.

While this is by no means an exhaustive encyclopedia consisting of every known animal, it remains quite thorough, and in it you will find information on most common animals and a hearty handful of more obscure ones. It has a rather extensive section on millipedes and related species, which contains care information not found in many other books

In addition to the overall quality of both contents and production, this book is further unique due to its similar appeal to advanced hobbyists and beginners alike. Regardless of your level of experience, you will no doubt reference this text often. If you care for a wide variety of terrarium pets, or intend to do so in the future, this book is a must have addition to your reference library.
