BOAS AND PYTHONS OF THE WORLD

BOAS AND PYTHONS OF THE WORLD By Mark O’Shea

Normally, the books reviewed in this section relate to the captive husbandry of reptiles and amphibians. However, this month, we are looking at a book with a slightly different format. O’Shea’s latest title, Boas and Pythons of the World, is an exquisite work profiling the natural history and habits of some of our planet’s most amazing snakes.

In addition to being a television personality, Mark O’Shea has a solid background in academia, and has conducted herpetological research both in his native U.K. and abroad. His vast knowledge and deep understanding of the animals that he studies is abundantly obvious to anyone who reads this book.

The first few chapters of this work provide general information regarding snake biology, ecology, and evolutionary patterns. There is a strong emphasis throughout the book on taxonomy and diversity, as well as emerging theories regarding divergent evolution of various species. Chapters on giant snakes, man-eaters, and conservation are included as well.

The majority of the text is devoted to profiling individual species and subspecies. All of the sub-specific taxonomy is current and well-researched. Each species profile includes data on size, behavior, range, habitat, feeding, and reproduction. O’Shea has had the opportunity to locate and study most, if not all, of these snakes in the wild, making his insight into their natural history both comprehensive and accurate.

All of the aforementioned profiles are organized by geography. The first section covers the boids of the Americas, followed by Europe and Asia, Africa, and finally Australasia. Essentially every corner of the globe is covered, and most families are represented.

Lucid writing and up to date information are not the only things this book has going for it. It is beautifully illustrated from cover to cover with stunning color photos, maps, and diagrams, making this book not only informative, but a pleasure to look at as well.

Full references and recommended readings are included, as is an index and easy to navigate table of contents. The oversized format of this book has allowed to author and editors to cram a very large amount of content into just over 150 pages.

This book is highly recommended both for snake owners and for those simply fascinated by these unique animals. It would also make a great gift for the snake lover in your life, and at only $29.99 it is truly a bargain. Get your copy today at LLLReptile.com. You won’t be disappointed!
