BOOK REVIEW

REPTILES, AMPHIBIANS, AND INVERTEBRATES: AN INDENTIFICATION AND CARE GUIDE By Patricia Bartlett, R.D. Bartlett, and Billy Griswold, DVM

While by no means a new book, this volume (compiled by some of herpertecultureā€™s leading authorities) is among the most frequently referenced texts in my library, and should be considered by all as a worthy addition to theirs.

Essentially this book is a vast compilation of basic "care sheets" for a wide variety of terrarium animals, both common and rare. The species accounts are broken down into sections as follows; snakes, lizards, tortoises and turtles, crocodilians, frogs and toads, newts and salamanders, and finally invertebrates. Each section is further broken down into sub-types of animals, making finding the information you are seeking simple and quick.

Each species profile is quite complete, and offers an excellent starting point for researching the needs of nearly any species frequently encountered in the pet trade. For every species covered, the authors have included a color photo, common name(s), taxonomic data including current Latin names, identifying features, range and origin, adult size, longevity, recommended terrarium size and type, social structure, diet, and potential problems. Additionally, each and every species account offers readers with a list of references which may be consulted for further information on that given animal.

The husbandry guidelines provided are topical and do not go into great detail, but that type of information would not be expected in this type of book. Instead, this text should be regarded as a handy quick reference or as an aid in choosing an appropriate pet.

Overall the production values and content of this book are superb. It is a sturdy paperback that will withstand years of constant use, and all of the photos are high quality glossy prints. As mentioned earlier, this book is an invaluable tool for hobbyists with all levels of experience, and makes a great gift too!
